Alabama Thunderpussy - Open Fire (Relapse)
When you think of bands like Motorhead and
Van Halen you think classic. When you hear bands that sound like
them like 20 years later you think, "Alright, this could be cool". When I
listen to Open Fire, the eighth album by Alabama Thunderpussy, I think not so
cool. This album is the complete opposite side of metal that you normally
hear by a band put on Relapse Records, the home of bands like Dillinger
Escape Plan and Cephalic Carnage. The raw production of this album makes it
sound even worse. The I listen to
Black Sabbath and drink whisky and sit around the bonfire sound is a
bit overplayed today. I do not care for new vocalist Kyle Thomas at all. I
feel that this band is nothing more than a novelty act. Honestly, I can't
take this band seriously with a name like Alabama Thunderpussy and an album
cover with Vikings on it. The only thing that makes this album worth any
time of even trying to stomach is the guitar work of
Erik Larson and Ryan Lake, who can shred pretty well. Other than
that this album was a complete bust for me and didn't enjoy it all.
