For their fourth album and first on Ferret Records, Cleveland natives Chimaira are back. After some problems in and out of the band after their last effort, the band are back and better than before. I never got into any of their previous material but I have taken a liking to Resurrection. This album brings former drummer Andols Herrick back into the picture and absolutely destroys. The drumming on this record is some of the heaviest I have heard in this genre for quite some time. Another new addition to the band is a whole lot of clean singing by vocalist Mark Hunter. The singing is a nice addition but at times seems to be a little over produced. The eerie keys add great atmosphere to Resurrection, as does the dual shredding of guitarists Rob Arnold and Matt Devries. Their fretwork leaves no empty spaces from their chugging to thrashing solos. Their work is showcased on the track “Six” which is an almost ten minute epic. Although this album isn’t quite as heavy as their previous material I wouldn’t say they have completely reinvented themselves. Resurrection is an album that will define what kind of band Chimaira are.
