City Sleeps - Not an Angel (Trustkill)
Straying away from the prototypical metalcore/mosh Trustkill sound, City
Sleeps have arrived with indie/pop rock with an edge. The opening intro
Hotel is a short, quiet little piece that quickly picks up into Prototype. A
faster more melodic track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. At
first listen, the album is kind of hard to get used to, as City Sleeps use
some odd timing and song structure, but it is still fairly easy to get into
Not an Angel. What you generally find on a Trustkill release is pretty much
absent on Not an Angel. Vocalist Ely Dye will occasionally let out a little
bit of a scream but besides that you will not find any chugging riffs,
constant double bass, or breakdowns to get your dance on. Instead you will
find good musicianship, above average lyrics, and some pretty catchy tunes.
Albeit City Sleeps are not the most original band in the world nor is their
material anything groundbreaking, but they are good at what they do and have
made a fun, solid, enjoyable record.
