Underneath the Gun - Forfeit Misfortunes
Forfeit Misfortunes, the debut album on Ferret Records for Underneath the
Gun is far from what was expected from this band after signing with the
label last year. The first thing that listeners will pick up on are the
almost unlistenable vocals of Harrison DeGrote. His lows are generic, the
screaming is whiny, and at points just sounds like bad yelling. The
musicianship is lackluster for the most part, leaving listeners with chug
chug breakdowns and overused blast beats. There are a few times where the
instrumentals are tight, such as on the track Reflection of Commonwealth,
the only song really worth noting on Forfeit Misfortunes. The melodic
instrumental track Crescendo really offers nothing and could have been left
off of the album. It's a struggle to get through this album front to back
and definitely won't be receiving multiple spins from this reviewer. Forfeit
Misfortunes is completely underwhelming and leaves the band with plenty of
room for improvement for their follow up (as long as they don't get
dropped).Nick Zimmer
