Here is an interview we just did with Parkway Drive. Super cool dudes who make some amazing music. Check them out.
First off can you state your name and what you do in the band.
Winston. I handle the
vocals and the sweat patches.
Where does the name Parkway
Drive come from?
Its the name of the street our drummer lives on. Our second home and practice space.
You just signed to Epitaph Records. What is the label switching process like?
Well we haven't really
switched as such. Any future releases will still be done through Resist
Records in Australia, which we couldn't be happier with. As for Epitaph
releasing our stuff in the States, we're stoked. We listened to and looked
up to so many bands on that label over the years, it's just amazing to be
associated with them.
What was the recording
process like for "Killing With a Smile"?
Fun and stressful. We
did it all in about 2 and a half weeks which wasn't even close to enough
time so everything was very rushed and we we're always worried we'd blow it.
But on the plus side it was a great experience. Adam is an awesome guy to
work with and it all came out well.
Do you guys have a set way
that you write music?
Yeah kinda. we
generally start with one riff and go from there. Just getting to that stage
generally takes about 4 weeks of shit jams before something fun happens. It
can be frustrating as hell.
A few of you are
vegetarians/vegans and straight edge. Do those beliefs affect the way you
write?
No not in the least.
We all have different beliefs and ways of living life, but it's not
something that we want to push on anyone else. Except smoking. We hate
smoking.
How has the new material
been received live?
Pretty well as far as
we can gather. We're having fun playing it kids seem to enjoy it so thats
all you could really want.
How has the band grown from
the release of "Don't Close Your Eyes" to "Killing With a Smile"?
I think we've
progressed a fair bit both as a band musically and in life in general. We're
always going to be limited by our skills when it comes to recordings so
there is always the urge for progression and improvement.
What is the scene like in
Australia?
Awesome. I wouldn't want to call anywhere else home.
Your summer is filled with European dates. What do you feel is the difference in playing home shows and then playing Europe and North America?
Obviously the difference is pretty large. We're playing in places that most of the time have never heard of us as opposed to playing in our backyard, but its great experience. It's all very new territory for us but its fun as hell.
Do you have any plans to hit North America this year?
Yeah, hopefully in
late July/August so keep an eye out for us.
What can someone who has
never seen you live expect at one of your shows?
Energy, excitement,
five guys that run into each other, blasts, bad hair, weird accents, sun
tans.
Do you have any pre show
rituals?
Nah not really. We
just sit around and eat or hide food for later so our fat tour manager
doesn't eat it all while we're playing.
If you could play a show
with any three artists, past or present, who would they be?
Midnight Oil, AC/DC,
Indecision. But that's just me. Everyone else probably disagrees.
Who has been your favorite
band to share the stage with so far?
Damn that's hard. I
think for me Every Time I Die. I love those guys. Oh, and an awesome band
from Wales called SHAPED BY FATE. Amazing. Check them out.
Who did the cover art for
"Killing With a Smile"?
Asterick Studios in
the states
When you aren't on tour
what do you do for fun?
Surf. We're all surf
kids. That and hang out with our families.
Thanks for taking the time
to do this. Do you have any last words for the readers?
Jeff has more grey hair than your average 80 year old and less flexibility.
