First can you state your name and what you do in
the band?
My name is Buz McGrath and I play
guitar.
How’s this tour going?
It’s awesome. Getting to tour with
Slayer is definitely a huge opportunity. Something I always dreamed of doing
and so now I can cross that off the list.
Well this is you’re second time with Slayer
right?
Yeah but I really don’t count Ozzfest
because it’s so far away.
Any good stories so far?
I got detained at a Wal-Mart in Iowa.
They thought I tried to steal Orange Juice. Late one night we had a Wal-Mart
stop and I was looking at coats. I was drinking an orange juice as I walked
around. So I put the orange juice down to try a coat on and I‘m walking
around trying to find a mirror. Next thing I know there is a cop that’s on
duty and he has the juice and says “This isn’t a walk through buffet”. I was
like sorry dude I just wanted to put it down to try on this coat. So he puts
me in the station that they have in Wal-Mart, cuffs me, searches me and all
this shit. He takes my picture and tells me I’m not allowed in Walm-Mart
anywhere again. Good time. He let me go after some hassle. He was totally
agro about it. I thought he was going to break my fingers.
You have been doing a lot of touring in support
of the album. You’ve done Ozzfest, this, and next you’re going out with
Dimmu. When can we expect a headlining tour?
Probably in the fall. We were supposed
to do a headliner, but that Dimmu thing came up, which is a good opportunity
to bring more fans in. A major market headlining tour will probably happen
in the fall.
Will you be doing any summer festivals?
No, it’s looking like we’re going to be
taking this summer off for once, which is amazing.
How did the writing process for In the Eyes of
Fire differ from The Oncoming Storm?
There really wasn’t much that was
different. We wrote all of our songs with Mike. A few of the songs on The
Oncoming Storm were with our old drummer. This time we had 100 percent of
his input. There was a slightly different dynamic. We kind of go about it
the same way, just take risks and bring it to practice.
Is there any meaning behind the name of the cd?
I don’t know. There really isn’t much of
a story. It was on of Trevor’s lyrics. We wrote it down on a piece of paper
and it looked cool. I thought it kind of went along with the whole vibe of
the record.
Have you guys written any new material?
Not yet, we’ve been keeping busy. I have
a few riffs of my own, but no real actual songs. Actually, we wrote a song
for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force soundtrack. I think it is going to be in the
credits. That’s a song that we did write.
This is my third time seeing you, what can
someone who has never seen you live expect?
Have a good time and to just party. We
try to get people involved as much as possible. I think it’s visually
entertaining, you know. You have people up here acting like monkeys you
know, and you can do some karate in the pit or whatever. There’s plenty of
room for that as well.
You’ve been able to play Ozzfest and Sounds of
the Underground. How do they compare/differ and which do you like more?
Well Sounds is more, well we did the
first year and it’s definitely more underground, hence the name. It’s not as
much of the juggernaut that Ozzfest is, but you definitely play to kids who
are dedicated to that type of music. Ozzfest you get the fringe type of
people that come out because it’s Ozzfest and don’t even know who’s playing
half the time. So you play to a lot of those people on Ozzfest. There’s
definitely more people at Ozzfest, it’s a slightly bigger beast.
I know Ken has Burn Your Wishes, are there any
other side projects?
Not for me. I just do this and chill.
What do you do when you’re not on tour?
Nothing. I hang out with my dog. That’s
about it. I relax, chill out at the house, mow the lawn. I do gay house shit
like clean the cat box.
Who did the artwork for III?
Umm, I forget his name and I should know
it. He did a great job. I wish I remembered his name. You know what, when
you print this just look in the cd and pretend that I knew.
If you could play a show with any three artists,
past or present, who would they be?
Probably Minor Threat, that’s a good
question. I’m trying to think of bands that aren’t around that would be
awesome. Minor Threat, Metallica, and Refused or Slayer’s last show ever. I
don’t know when that’s going to be, but there’s going to be a day where they
go “that’s it, it‘s our last show and people are going to die”.
How did you guys come up with the name Unearth?
Our old drummer kind of came up with it.
We kicked around some names and wanted one with one word. Simple enough,
there’s no real deep meaning behind it. It sounded cool and came up with a
cool logo. We didn’t want some long name like She Did This To Me or As I Lay
This. I love As I Lay Dying, but I have to pick on their name.
Did you get to visit Disney?
Me and my wife walked around Downtown
Disney for a bit. We didn’t go into the park but we farted around here. It’s
a pretty cool scene.
That’s all. Anything you’d like to add for the
fans and readers?
Thanks for checking out this interview
and buy our new cd.
